Mothers Intuition

Have you ever had an instinct? An instinct that begins as a gnawing...Then grows into a raging burn; a burning instinct that something is wrong...

Your baby continues to get sick from the very foods he is supposed to thrive on. I did. I am a mom of a little boy just diagnosed with FPIES.

And that burning feeling now? Extinguished. My instincts? Stronger than ever. Guiding me, with my faith, as we navigate through the murky waters of our new world created by something called FPIES.

"Faith is not about everything turning out OK; Faith is about being OK no matter how things turn out."

Moving on....

We are considering millet to be safe/pass.  He doesn't love the porridge and I do not think he can tolerate much more then 5tsp of it without some stomach discomfort in general but I am putting it on the list of safe foods to rotate around (once we have enough safe foods to do this!).  I will keep offering it to him.   For 2 days this week, I gave him millet porridge and plum mix- he took coaxing (and reading stories and making animal noises and a cheering squad) but he ate 10 baby teaspoonfuls each day.   The first day, he did great- no issues whatsoever.  The second, he was starting to show some discomfort.  This seems to be a trend we've noticed (these food trials having lots of stop-start because of our schedules and other things that arise).  The start-stop pattern has put together some clues for him (I think).  From what I can tell, he does good the first day of the food, by day 2 - he showing some signs of tummy aches and by day 3 we have to slow way down or stop (or he just refuses) because his stomach aches are too much.   I think he may do well with a rotation diet.only right now we have nothing to rotate!   But plums have had more pain than millet, millet wasn't pain- just some minimal discomfort every now and then. Plums are a more obvious pain...although we did it so slowly and in such small amounts - I think we controlled it ok for him.   So, plums will be put to the side for now.  They will be a "see you later" food....there is no reason for such small amounts of food to cause so much discomfort.  Fruits will be a challenge with him (all carbohydrates will be) but fruits will be an extra challenge.  To find the ones that do not cause his belly pain with the entire digestion process, and diarrhea.

So, on to spinach.  I bought some today- steamed it and pureed it.   We plan to start tomorrow.  I have no idea what to expect.

I also got Probiotics today - ordered hypoallergenic ones online.   I am anxious to see how he would do on these but it will have to be a sort of trial in itself.  So, I have to wait a bit for that.  When we need a break, between one of the next food trials.

Today, was a break.  Today he had a good day.  Lots of playing on his own, little whining, sleeping ok, eating well.  Lets hope it continues through the spinach trial!

  1. Good luck, Joy! Glad to see that millet is a pass, even with small amounts. Have you tried the flour yet? There is this Indian bread that you can make with just millet flour and water. It entails the mixture being cooked for a while and actually cooked twice (you cook it to make the dough and THEN cook the bread-- think polenta) Anyways, let me know if you want more info!

  2. Oh Joy, I'm so behind in everything, but thrilled to be catching up with you guys. Millet and plums, even in small amounts that will have to be in rotation, are very exciting. Spinach was crazy easy for us and we hope it is for you too. Spinach opened the door to quinoa and I hope that is the case for you as well. Hugs, hugs and more hugs! Jamie
